What I am Watching: Vers Le Sud

Actually this was a very good movie about well to do white women using the young boy of Haiti as their personal toys. With tragic consequences for the natives. This is no Stella Got Her Groove back all though you can make a case of that movie being parallel to this in some small way.

AFRICAN WOMAN SETS HERSELF ON FIRE TO PROTEST AGAINST RACISM

All I can say is WHOA!
AFRICAN WOMAN SETS HERSELF ON FIRE TO PROTEST AGAINST RACISM
The horrifying sight which traumatized shoppers and office workers in the centre of Luxembourg City last week has now been labelled as a protest against racism. The Belgian woman of Congolese origin who set herself alight in the middle of Place d’Armes told witnesses that she was doing it to protest against racism, moments before she carried out the desperate act which has left her in hospital fighting for her life.

Older White Women Seek Out Young African Men.

This is just plain old wrong.
It is exploitative.
It is destructive.
It is typical of the treatment the well to do give the have nots'.
AND ALSO, I said it once and I will say it again, for those who want to be blind to the facts, and put the blame on the spread of HIV on the black and Gay people of the world you take a good look at this article. As far as I am concerned this is how HIV was introduced and spread to people of color and the rest of the planet.
There is a movie about this that takes place in Haiti. In fact the documentary I wrote about has this element in it. I'll have that other movie for you later.
Here is the article.
MOMBASA - Bethan, 56, lives in southern England on the same street as best friend Allie, 64. They are on their first holiday to Kenya, a country say is "just full of big young boys who like us older girls".
Hard figures are difficult to come by, but local people on the coast estimate that as many as one in five single women visiting from rich countries are in search of sex.
Allie and Bethan - who both declined to give their full names - said they planned to spend a whole month touring Kenya's palm-fringed beaches.
They would dowel to avoid the country's tourism officials."It's not evil," said Jake Grieves-Cook, chairman of the Kenya Tourist Board, when asked about the practise of older rich women travelling for sex with young Kenyan men.
"But it's certainly something we frown upon."
Also, the health risks are stark in a country with an AIDS prevalence of 6.9 per cent.
Although condom use can only be guessed at, Julia Davidson, an academic at Nottingham University who writes on sex tourism, said that in the course of her research she had met women who shunned condoms - finding them too "businesslike"for their exotic fantasies.
The white beaches of the Indian Ocean coast stretched before the friends as they both walked arm-in-arm with young African men, Allie resting her white haired-head on the shoulder of her companion, a six-foot-four23-year-old from the Maasai tribe.
He wore new sunglasses he said were a gift from her."We both get something we want - where's the negative?" Allie asked in a bar later, nursing Strong, golden cocktail.
She was still wearing her bikini top, having just pulled on a pair of jeans and a necklace of traditional African beads.
Be than sipped the same local drink: a powerful mix of honey, fresh limes and vodka known locally as "Dawa",or "medicine".
She kept one eye on her date - a 20-year-old playing pool, a red bandanna tying back dreadlocks and new-looking sports shoes on his feet.
He looked up and came to join her at the table, kissing her, then collecting more coins for the pool game.
'Just un whole some' Grieves-Cook and many hotel managers say they are doing all they can to discourage the practice of older women picking up local boys, arguing it is far from the type of tourism they want to encourage in the east African nation.
"The head of a local hoteliers' association told me they have begun taking measures - like refusing guests who want to change from a single to a double room,"Grieves-Cook said.
"It's about trying to make those guests feel as uncomfortable as possible ... But it's a fine line. We are 100 per cent against anything illegal, such as prostitution. But it's different with something like this - it's just unwholesome.
"These same beaches have long been notorious for attracting another type of sex tourists - those who abuse children.
As many as 15,000 girls in four coastal districts -about a third of all 12-18 year-old girls there - are involved in casual sex for cash, a joint study by Kenya's government and UN children's charity UNICEF reported late last year.
Up to 3,000 more girls and boys are in full-time sex work, it said, some paid for the "most horrific and abnormal acts".
Preying on poverty Emerging alongside this black market trade - and obvious in the bars and on the sand once the sun goes down - are thousands of elderly white women hoping for romantic, and legal, encounters with much younger Kenyan men.
They go dining at fine restaurants, then dancing, and back to expensive hotel rooms overlooking the coast."
One type of sex tourist attracted the other," said one manager at a shore front bar on Mombasa's Bamburi beach.
"Old white guys have always come for the younger girl sand boys, preying on their poverty ... But these old women followed ... they never push the legal age limits, they seem happy just doing what is sneered a tin their countries.
"Experts say some thrive on the social status and financial power that comes from taking much poorer, younger lovers."
This is what is sold to tourists by tourism companies- a kind of return to a colonial past, where white women are served, serviced, and pampered by black minions," said Nottinghan University's Davidson.
'Live like the rich 'Many of the visitors are on the lookout for men like Joseph.Flashing a dazzling smile and built like an Olympic basketball star, the 22-year-old said he has slept with more than 100 white women, most of them 30 years his senior.
"When I go into the clubs, those are the only women Look for now," he told Reuters. "I get to live like the rich mzungus (white people) who come here from rich countries, staying in the best hotels and just having my fun.
"At one club, a group of about 25 dancing men - most of them Joseph look-a likes - edge closer and closer to a crowd of more than a dozen white women, all in their autumn years."It's not love, obviously. I didn't come here looking for a husband," Bethan said over a pounding beat from the speakers."
It's a social arrangement. I buy him a nice shirt and we go out for dinner. For as long as he stays with me he doesn't pay for anything, and I get what I want - a good time. How is that different from a man buying a young girl dinner?"

When I first heard about this I thought it was a joke, if true he was going to pull through. It wasnt and he did not.
At 2 AM I put up on this blog the incident light heartedly thinking at the least there would be jokes for days about it.

What I am watching: GHOSTS OF CITE SOLEIL

It's hard to nail down anything positive about the players this documentary, every one is a hero, villain, mercenary, backstabber, cheat and liar. Yet the despair of the people have you feeling pity for them all. It was very enlightening to say the least, but my one beef with this documentary is the lack of incite on the foreign powers influence on the island that led to the rise and fall of these gangs that walked the line of patriots and terrorists. The poverty is shocking, no ghetto in the U.S.A has it this rough. Any time you think you have it bad you take a look at this DVD and realize how bless you are. There are subtitles for those who do not know french or the Haitian version of it.
Here is the review from Amazon.com
Billed as a Caribbean epic of family, love and violence,
GHOSTS OF CITE SOLEIL takes us inside the lives of notorious gang leaders who dominate the Haitian slum of Cite Soleil. The reality of life today in Haiti unfolds before us as we get to know two brothers and their stories intimately. They are 2Pac and Bily, Haitian gang leaders who strive to make better choices in a world with no choices at all. Through unprecedented access, we see the brothers love and hatred for each other, their love triangle with Lele, a French relief worker, and their unsavory pact with President Aristide during his desperate grasp to maintain power in early 2004. Speaking the language of violence and knowing that staying alive in Haiti is a very day-to-day proposition, 2Pac and Bily struggle to find a better life for themselves and for their people.

Black Female Super Hero, Ant may come to Anime and live action Film

Well it looks like one of my favorite comic book characters may hit the big time.
Comics 2 Film is reporting that the Black Female character may make her debut as live action on screen and cable TV as an anime.Check out the link to there website for more info.
http://www.comics2film.com/index.php?a=story&b=29945
I have mixed feelings about it, I have been out of the comic book circle for a while and the last I remember of this title was that it was on Image comics.
Now the creator Mario Gully has set up shop at Big City Comics: http://www.bigcitycomicsstudio.com/default.htm , things have changed.
The comic is really an underground hit that was a bit titillating, but the way it is drawn and depicted now if the previous publishing was PG 13 this one is a close NC 17, which has me wondering do we need any more hyper sexualized images of black women. Now this is no Nelly Tip Drill video gone radio active by far but it is not tame either.
There are not enough mainstream representation of black super heroes on paper, TV or big screen let alone of black women to be picky but this one maybe pushing it.
I will be watching warily.
China's Helping Hand.

I am always wary when I hear super power nations lending poor nations a helping hand.
China is flexing it's international muscle for reasons ranging from good PR, obtaing natural resources, shoring up UN votes ect, ect, like any good ol 1st world nation would. There all in the Middle East Africa and the Americas, in some shape or fashion. A lot of this is help is tied into the idea by the Chinese goverment that Tiawan should not be recognized as a sorveign nation but instead a state of China, (Haiti at one time has recogized taiwan as a independt nation).
This excerpt of an article written on the matter was taken from the Haitian Times website.

Chief Praises China’s Contribution To Haiti’s Stability Haitian Times News WiresU.N. Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Jean-Marie Guehenno on Tuesday praised China’s “important contribution” to ending the crisis and promoting stability in Haiti.
Guehenno called upon the China Peacekeeping Police Training Center in Langfang, which is in northern Hebei Province, where a 125-member riot police team has been trained for a U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti. The team displayed its skills for the U.N. official, including combat skills, search techniques, hostage rescue, VIP protection and crowd control.
Praising their performance, Guehenno said that he was “very impressed” by the high-level skills and professionalism of the Chinese riot police. He expressed confidence that they would make an important contribution to promoting peace in Haiti and helping people.
The team, China’s sixth deployment to Haiti, is scheduled to leave in December. Over the past four months, they were trained in languages, shooting, driving and combat skills, and received high recognition from U.N. officials.......
Inspirational, I guess?
The caller said doctor your patient mrs Thompson is dying, and she is asking for you.
I received this call a week ago from the night nurse at a hospice where one of my patients was admitted with terminal organs failure.
Edith has been a patient of mine for over two years, she was 80 years old, she had one son, a 60 year old who never got married, and over the years he returned to the family home to be with his mom.
I was treating her for heart failure, hypertension, and osteoporosis. Not long ago she became acutely ill, and I admitted her to the cardiac ward, she quickly stabilised and was doing well, until a young intern on a morning round decided to play God, and told Edith that she probably had a month to live.
After I had it out with the intern, I proceeded to repair my patient who by then, was in pieces, so much so that she was afraid of her own shadow. With all my difficulties I made a commitment to either call or visit Edith daily.
We became friends and talked about all sorts of things, youth, family, the wars, old age, regrets, memories.
I shared with her my son's serious illnesses and she shared with me her fear of dying.
She was very concerned about leaving her 60 year old son behind, with no one to look after him. But she also had hope that death would reunite her with her beloved husband who died some 10 years ago.
During my daily contacts with Edith, a trusted relationship developed between us. I never lied to her about her situation, but I never told her what would only compound her distress. and was not necessary for her to know. In medical school I read ' The House Of God ,' a must read for all medical students to help break the rigours of a very demanding discipline. So I told this intern that the next time he feels like playing God, don't use my patients.
I struggled to keep her positive and we both made a liar out of the intern, because 3 months later she was still alive, if unstable.
The week preceding her death, we had our last long talk, we approach the subject of death at a different angle. I proposed to her the theory that, death does not really exist; because the very essence of life is infinite. I convinced her that she will trade the body she is in now for something new and different, then I stared her in the eyes before I told her that the Edith who is talking to me now, cannot and will never seize to exist. We then made a pact that she is to ask for me when the time was near so I can say farewell, but not goodbye.
When I arrived at the hospice it was well in the wee hour of morning, and Edith was still conscious. I took her hand, she opened her eyes and looked at me, she then whispered to me that she was ready for her new outfit.
I told her to be strong and started to recite psalm 23. When I got to the part of God will be with her as she navigates her way through the valley of shadow and death, to fear nothing, she took her last breath with a smile on her face.
I returned home, exhausted but proud to know that I was with Edith all the way, and saw her through the other side with a smile on her face.
I poured myself a shot of vodka and went to bed with a smile on my face.

Good Riddance to Rachel Paulose

Attorneymom first talked about this lady on her blog. I must say this was quick though.
From Motherjones Blog.
Paulose has been unceremoniously recalled to D.C. where she'll be working at the Department of Justice's office of legal policy, where she won't have to manage anybody, since that's apparently is not her strong suit. Newbie AG Michael Mukasey pulled Paulose out just as veteran prosecutors in Minnesota were reportedly planning a second mass resignation to protest her management. Three other managers, veteran prosecutors all, demoted themselves back to line positions back in April saying the just couldn't work with her anymore. Her dictatorial management style supposedly included quoting Bible passages and hurling racial epithets at subordinates.
Product Placement.

The Honda CBR 1000 (1996 only!)
Boys and Girls Ti Papa aka clnmike love sports bikes or as like to call them the Crotch Rockets.
This CBR 1000 1996 was my favorite bike. Now most people in the bike world would say that this bike is very pedestrian, especially by CBR 900cc standards but I like it. CBRs in the 90s tend to be unforgiving in the clutch.
Comfortable ergonomics, effective combined braking system (reviewers have called it heavy but I likes) an unassuminging engine.
Would have to agree that it is meant for the older adults who want to live to ride as opposed to ride or die.
As sports bike go for that year it is a B level bike but the wt and response was to my liking. Bikes that are to light tend to over react with breaking and coming off the line not to mention the streets of Atlanta are almost built for SUVs making riding the streets plus traffic and adventure.
The moment I sold mine I regretted it. In my book it is an A+ bike.
An 8-year-old and two 9-year-old boys, accused of raping an 11-year-old neighbor.
This one is already picking upsteam in the blogoshpere, but something doesnt sit right with me about this story. Im still waiting for them to use a rape kit on the little girl to verify the story. I will hold my judgement.

THE VENDETTA AGAINST BARRY BONDS.
This is a vendetta You can not convince me other wise. This is not about steroids, the sanctimony of baseball or even perjury. This about The government out to put a "nigger" in his place. The government after 4 years of investigations decided to indict Bonds on perjury charges, a sentence that could get him 30 years in prison.
The lie you ask?
The lie was, to paraphrase was i did take steroids but at the time I did not know that it was steroids.
30 years for that.
Lets put this in perspective Victor Conte the owner of BALCO the company that conceived, manufactured and distributed the drug. Got 4 month and dropped dime on all his clients in the process. You know what that looks like to me? That looks like a crack dealer getting caught in his own dope house loaded with cash and drugs, getting off with probation while the crackhead (Bonds) gets thrown under the jail. Not in it, under it! Tell me how does that make sense.
Still not convinced?
Lets try this, Mark McGwuire, Rafael Palmeiro and Sammy (no speaka english this time) Sosa all went to congress and denied, lied, and refused to answer the question. None of them will be on trial. Palmeiro looked everyone in the eye pointed his finger and said "I have never used Steroids!". Than mister integrity gets busted later that year with performance enhancing drug in his system!! Again not on trial.
Mind still not blown?
Lets try this, Victore Conte gave over a 100 names of his clients who were on the stuff, some were paraded in front of prosecutors to give testimony but we never heard the names. Yet everything about Barry Bonds gets leaked all over the media. Why is that? Where are the 100 and more jocks on that list?
NAAAAW partner there is only one reason the FEDS spent 6 million dollars to go after Bonds.
They don't like his SWAGGER.
You read it right.
Bonds has to much attitude for a negro given the privilege to entertain the white masses.
Bonds does not sign autographs.
Bonds does not jump when the press tells him to.
Bonds has the nerve to cheat on his at the time white wife.
Bonds is chasing Aarons home run record (the most overrated record in sports).
Bonds is ungrateful.
Bonds is an asshole.
That's why the FEDS want a piece of his black ass people, that is why we are watching them bend and twist the law to get what they want. They want to put the nigger in his place.
They want more than what they got out of Marion Jones. You remember her don't you? America's crooked tooth darling who was shocked and disgusted by her than boy friend and a ex husband dropping dime on her for steroids. The one who vowed to fight the FEDS allegations she was on the juice tooth and nail. Saw what happened to her? All in front of the camera crying her eyes out begging for mercy.
Believe me the FEDS liked Jones, what do you think they'll do to Bonds.
Now some of you saying so what he is a jerk who had it coming.
Really? He was that bad that we will stop and watch the people who enforce the laws damn near break it to go after him, because they don't like him? We shouldn't care huh? You remember that when the cops pull you over, shoot your love one down in the streets, give you time for a crime you did not commit, put your missing child on the back pages of the news paper, remember that.
The lynchings are still going on boys and girls there just so sophisticated that we don't know its going on.

December 8th!! Ricky Floyd Mayweather Jr VS. Ricky Hatton

Yeah that sounds about right.

philander:
(of a man) to make love with a woman one cannot or will not marry; carry on flirtations.
Womanizing:
To pursue women lecherously.
Lecherous:
1. given to or characterized by lechery; lustful.
2. erotically suggestive; inciting to lust.
Yeah that is pretty close, no cigar but close, but the one thing they can never say that I am:
Cheater.
Women Beater.
Insensitive.
Cold.
Distant.
Sexist.
Just because I like women (preferably unclothed) does not mean I do not respect or love them, or advocate their abuse or oppression.
For those wondering were I stand.
Beauty of the Week 2: Serena Williams.

There are certain women that I would run from because I know that there presence would signal the end of my happy go lucky bachelor days. This is what these beauty of the weeks are about and Ms. Serena Williams is example one.
The sunshine smile, the body, the pretty face, the body, the intelligence, the body, the giggly girl next door demeanor, the body, the competitive streak, the body, the deep chocolate skin, did I say the body?
What I like is that she has the mind of an assassin when it comes to playing tennis you don't know she has complete contempt for her opponent till she loses, and someone sticks a mic in her face. You notice how it is always "I lost" the match and not my opponent won? I like a little ego. Just a little though.
This woman can have my years salary on site! I mean I know she probably loses more than that between the seat cushions of her couch but the point is she can have it damn it!

News From Planet "Duh Really?!?" 1: Santa banned from using the word Ho.
Santas in Australia's largest city have been told not
to use Father Christmas's traditional "ho ho ho"
greeting because it may be offensive to women, it was
reported Thursday.
Sydney's Santa Clauses have instead been instructed to
say "ha ha ha" instead, the Daily Telegraph reported.
One disgruntled Santa told the newspaper a recruitment
firm warned him not to use "ho ho ho" because it could
frighten children and was too close to "ho", a US
slang term for prostitute.
"Gimme a break," said Julie Gale, who runs the
campaign against sexualising children called Kids Free
2B Kids.
"We are talking about little kids who do not
understand that "ho, ho, ho" has any other connotation
and nor should they," she told the Telegraph.
"Leave Santa alone."
A local spokesman for the US-based Westaff recruitment
firm said it was "misleading" to say the company had
banned Santa's traditional greeting and it was being
left up to the discretion of the individual Santa
himself.

Dunbar Village: COUNTER PROTESTERS TO GREET SHARPTON FRIDAY AT DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
WASHINGTON, D.C.-November 13, 2007- When Rev. Al Sharpton descends on the Department of Justice headquarters on Friday, November 16, 2007, he'll be greeted by counter protesters asking why he and other African American leaders have refused to publicly comment on a horrific crime against humanity committed against a Black woman and her child in a housing project called Dunbar Village located in West Palm Beach, FL.
The Dunbar Village tragedy is the horrific story of the brutal gang rape, sodomy, and torture of a 35 year old black Haitian immigrant and her 12 year old son. 10 black teens forced their way into the victim's home at a public housing complex in West Palm Beach, Florida. The mother was forced to perform fellatio on her own son at gunpoint. The teens then cut and stabbed the mother and her son, poured cleaning
solvent on their skin and in their eyes, and would have set them both on fire, but as one teen suspect reported, no one in the gang had matches. Currently, only four suspects are in custody. During the 3 hour rape and torture, not a single neighbor called 911.
The counter protest was organized by Shane Johnson after he read about the crime on the blog, What About Our Daughters? "How is it that practically every social justice organization from the ACLU to the NAACP to the SCLC knows something about Dunbar Village but refuses to speak out about it?", asks, Shane Johnson who is a blogger and the author of Black Sapience…My .02 (http://blacksapience.blogspot.com). Johnson adds, "This protest is not to request that Sharpton and his allies march in West Palm Beach, but simply an inquiry regarding Rev. Sharpton's peculiar silence on this issue."
For over three months, Gina McCauley, who created the blog, What About Our Daughters? (whataboutourdaughters.blogspot.com) has been asking why prominent African Americans have failed to make any public comment about the Dunbar Village crime. She posted the names and contact information of prominent African Americans and organizations on her
blog and despite numerous calls, emails and letters from readers, not a single person on the list has issued a public comment on the crime. She describes their refusal to publicly comment "Immoral Indifference."
"It is the height of hypocrisy that Black leaders have remained silent for so long about the Dunbar Village Rape tragedy. Black leaders remain silent about victims of Black on Black crime." McCauley noted on her blog that several prominent African American issued statements on the humane treatment of animals during the controversy surrounding Michael Vick. "We can get a statement about dogs, but not about two
human beings."
Tanisha Mathis, who operates the website Essential Presence (http://essentialpresence.blogspot.com) adds, "African Americans are falsely led to believe the mainstream is not sensitive to their issues but its proven repeatedly that it is, in fact, Black leaders and Black news entities that are the most silent in regards to crimes against Blacks like the Dunbar Village gang rape."
McCauley and Mathis have both blogged tirelessly about the Dunbar village case and have produced online videos in an effort to increase awareness of the crime. To date, their videos have been viewed almost 100,000 times. Mathis' video was featured on the local news in West Palm Beach, and Mathis has toured Dunbar village at the behest of local leaders.
The counter protesters will meet Rev. Al Sharpton and his supporters in Washington, DC at the Justice Department on Friday, November 16, 2007.
"This type of crime happened on our watch and our "leaders" are still silent. They are silent because they are indifferent. Their indifference is immoral." McCauley says.
This protest is a call to arms for anyone who cares about black women. For more information, contact Shane at sbjatlanta@yahoo.com , http://blacksapience.blogspot.com.

Sixth Graders Take on Wall Street
By Steven Gray/Chicago
On a recent afternoon at an elementary school on Chicago's South Side, eighth grader Victoria Bills is sitting in the boardroom. A rendering of the New York Stock Exchange dominates one wall, fronted by a bear and a bull. On another wall are four clocks showing the time in London, Tokyo, New York and Chicago. It's the first day of school, and Victoria is considering potential investments. In particular: How Mattel's toy recall is impacting the company's stock price.
It's hardly a typical 13-year-old's concern. But then, Ariel Community Academy is unusual. Its 420 students, nearly all black and about 81% from low-income families, are testing an intriguing proposition: Can teaching urban black kids finance and economics help some of them escape poverty — and shake African-American skepticism about Wall Street?
Despite the growth of the black middle class, the percentage of affluent blacks investing in the stock market is actually falling, while such investment by their white peers remains steady. That's partly because blacks have historically relied on real estate as a primary wealth builder. Plus, blacks save far less than whites for retirement. That's why John W. Rogers Jr., CEO of the company that backs the academy, says, "The issue of financial literacy in our schools will hopefully avert a crisis."
The experiment began in the early 1990s. A young Chicago executive named Arne Duncan, then running the foundation of the investment firm Ariel Capital Management, rallied a group of business and education leaders to create a public school whose students could compete with kids from any elite private school. Many deemed public education hopeless. By the mid-1990s, Chicago's mayor seized control of his city's failing schools. So the idea of creating a predominantly black school with an emphasis on finance and economics — in one of the city's most bullet-pocked neighborhoods — was viewed by some as preposterous.
In 1996, Ariel Community Academy opened in a building inside a Chicago park. In 1999, it moved into part of the William Shakespeare School, a sturdy redbrick building that had been shuttered for years. The building underwent a multimillion-dollar renovation, mirroring the arrival of gleaming condos nearby. City officials encouraged the foundation to put its name on the school's building, partly to inspire others to follow suit. Ariel's executives were aware of the risks: The school's failure could hurt the company's reputation, and that of its founder Rogers, who grew up in the neighborhood with Duncan and had become one of the country's most successful black businessmen.
Each first-grade class is given $20,000, initially managed by Ariel Capital Management and Nuveen Investments. Starting in sixth grade, students join a "junior board" that invests that money. In recent years, students bought stock in companies like Adidas, Tiffany and Disney. After eighth-grade graduation, the seed money is cycled to the incoming first-grade class. Profit is split: half goes to a school improvement fund, the rest is divided among students. They choose between investing their share in a college savings program or receiving a check.
Earlier this year, Victoria, the eigth-grader, heard buzz about Apple’s iPhone, then lobbied the junior board to buy the company’s stock – just before its priced reached the $90s. “We caught Apple at the right time,” the honey-toned girl says, sitting in the school’s boardroom.
Nearby, Myles Gage, a 13-year-old eighth-grader, flipped through annual reports of Toyota and Smucker — companies in which the junior board has invested. When it picked Google, the stock was hitting $400. "It was worth paying for," he says. Now, the aspiring investment banker says he follows Google's performance (its stock is now over $500) on Yahoo Finance and CNBC.
Ariel's school day starts earlier, and ends later, than most public schools. Some students voluntarily show up for Saturday morning tutoring. Ariel's foundation picks up much of the tab for extra teaching staff. It also pays for security, even ties for the boys, which are required for sixth, seventh and eighth graders. "It sets the tone for success," says Matthew Yale, 29, the head of Ariel's foundation.
It’s rare for elementary schools to teach economics or finance. Just seven states have made taking a personal finance course a high school graduation requirement, and only 17 have made economics a high school requirement, according to the National Council on Economic Education, a New York advocacy group. Conventional wisdom holds that black youth in many urban public schools aren't academically competitive with their white peers, especially in math. Ariel punctures those assumptions: Last year, 88% of Ariel's students met or exceeded Illinois' math standards, compared to 67% of Chicago public students overall. Ariel's students are being recruited by top private schools. Parents are having frank conversations with their children about finance — even asking them for investment advice.
Corporate investment in public schools is hardly new. But experts say the depth of Ariel's involvement is striking. The irony is that Duncan, one of the school's key architects, is now CEO of the Chicago's public school system. He's been among the most aggressive in the nation in promoting corporate investment in public education. "It's the way of the future," says Duncan, 42, "I've not yet seen a company in the financial arena step forward to replicate what's happening at Ariel," he adds. "That's what we'd love to see happen."

Monkeys with Guns 1: The Police and Little Old Ladies..
Chicago cop's actions against mentally ill woman probed
November 6, 2007
BY MARY MITCHELL Sun-Times Columnist
Unless an 82-year-old grandmother is holding a loaded gun, there's no excuse for police officers to use a Taser.
None.
But that's what happened Oct. 29 when Chicago Police officers went to a West Side home to make a "well-being" check. The officers were responding to a request from the city's Department of Aging.
Apparently, the department had received an anonymous tip that Lillian Fletcher, who has a history of mental illness, was home alone and in need of assistance.
When Fletcher refused to open her door, police were called. Although Fletcher cracked the door, she still refused to let her visitors into the house.
But police officers wouldn't take no for an answer and pushed their way in. Fletcher ran and got the hammer she keeps beside her bed.
"My grandmother is easily confused," her granddaughter, Traci Taylor, said Monday. "She probably didn't know what was going on."
Taylor is one of her grandmother's caregivers. She said her grandmother has schizophrenia and dementia.
Normally Fletcher is looked after by a homemaker or by her own daughter and Taylor. Only recently did these women find themselves between homemakers.
"She can be belligerent," Taylor said. But she's 82 years old, 5 feet 1 inch and weighs no more than 160 pounds, she added.
"I just don't think they should be Tasing 82-year-old women. That's ridiculous."
Reportedly swinging a hammer
According to a police source, when officers arrived, Fletcher was "swinging a hammer" and becoming "increasingly violent."
When Fletcher failed to stop as ordered, an officer discharged a Taser. Also, it's worth noting that Fletcher hasn't been charged with violating any laws.
"The matter is being looked into by the Office of Professional Standards, and the Chicago Police Department will also be reviewing the matter to determine if procedures were followed," a police spokesman said.
After Tasing Fletcher, officers took her to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where she was treated. Her family is concerned Fletcher may have suffered a stroke. Citing privacy laws, a hospital spokesman declined comment.
But Taylor said a social worker at the hospital advised relatives of the circumstances surrounding Fletcher's hospitalization. Fletcher was released five days later, but she is still complaining about her hip and a burn on her abdomen. Doctors told Fletcher's family that she should be seen by a neurologist because she has fluid on her brain and may have to undergo surgery.
'There has to be another way'
Unfortunately, despite Fletcher's documented mental condition, police officers -- including a sergeant -- resorted to the same tactics they use when they are dealing with violent criminals.
For instance, last August, Chicago Police officers were accused of causing the death of a South Side man after they subdued him with a Taser. The officers were responding to a 911 call placed by the man's family. Allegedly, Gefery Johnson was combative and resisted arrest. Officers used a Taser and pepper spray on Johnson, and he later died.
Last week, the Cook County medical examiner's office ruled Johnson's death "accidental" and blamed cocaine intoxication rather than the Taser.
About 150 field training officers will soon be equipped with new Tasers. About 200 sergeants have had Tasers for about five years. Obviously, there are times when a Taser should be used to keep the peace. And disabling an out-of-control person is better than shooting that person and asking questions later.
But in Fletcher's case, police officers showed extremely poor judgment. Even if she didn't look elderly, there was no question she was mentally disturbed.
How do these police officers justify using such force on an elderly woman? Where was their compassion?
"I want people to know what happened," Taylor said. "I want them to try and do something as far as regulating Taser use. We're talking about an 82-year-old woman.
"There has to be another way to stop her -- use your stick and block the hammer," she said. "Knock it out of her hand. How hard is that?"

Say no to Africom!!
I actually read about this earlier in one of the African news paper they sell in Atlanta. I have a friend in the army who says that the military has been quietly recruiting black soldiers to "volunteer" to go over with extra pay and bonuses. I guess they USA doesn't want to rehash memories of colonialism. From what my friend says they already have a base over there this just the prequel to a "surge". This is wrong on so many levels. This taking the war to the terrorist mess is actually taking it to other nations. The military is a target that the terrorist are following all around the world and innocent people will be caught in the cross fire.
Believe me you this is about Oil and terrorism and the nations of Africa will be very foolish to let the US set up shop in there back yard.
Say No to Africom
Danny Glover & Nicole C. Lee
With little scrutiny from Democrats in Congress and nary a whimper of protest from the liberal establishment, the United States will soon establish permanent military bases in sub-Saharan Africa. An alarming step forward in the militarization of the African continent, the US Africa Command (Africom) will oversee all US military and security interests throughout the region, excluding Egypt. Africom is set to launch by September 2008 and the Senate recently confirmed Gen. William "Kip" Ward as its first commander.
General Ward told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Africom would first seek "African solutions to African problems." His testimony made Africom sound like a magnanimous effort for the good of the African people. In truth Africom is a dangerous continuation of US military expansion around the globe. Such foreign-policy priorities, as well as the use of weapons of war to combat terrorist threats on the African continent, will not achieve national security. Africom will only inflame threats against the United States, make Africa even more dependent on external powers and delay responsible African solutions to continental security issues.
The US militarization of Africa is further rationalized by George W. Bush's claims that Africom "will enhance our efforts to bring peace and security to the people of Africa" and promote the "goals of development, health, education, democracy and economic growth." Yet the Bush Administration fails to mention that securing and controlling African wealth and natural resources is key to US trade interests, which face growing competition from China. Transnational corporations rely on Africa for petroleum, uranium and diamonds--to name some of the continent's bounty. West Africa currently provides 15 percent of crude oil imports to the United States, and that figure is expected to rise to 25 percent by 2015.

Women vs. Girls.
Cant remember were I ripped this from.
Wise words from a sister...
"Never make someone a priority who only makes you an option!"
Grown Woman
Girls leave their schedule wide-open and wait for a guy to call and make
plans.
Grown women make their own plans and nicely tell the guy to get in where
he fits.
Girls want to control the man in their life.
Grown women know that if he's truly hers, he doesn't need controlling.
Girls check you for not calling them.
Grown women are too busy to realize you hadn't.
Girls are afraid to be alone.
Grown women revel in it-using it as a time for personal growth.
Girls ignore the good guys.
Grown women ignore the bad guys.
Girls make you come home.
Grown women make you want to come home.
Girls worry about not being pretty and/or good enough for their man.
Grown women know that they are pretty and/or good enough for any man.
Girls try to monopolize all their man's time (I.e., don't want him
hanging with his friends).
Grown women realize that a lil' bit of space makes the 'together time'
even more special-and goes to kick it with her own friends.
Girls think a guy crying is weak.
Grown women offer their shoulder and a tissue.
Girls want to be spoiled and 'tell' their man so.
Grown women 'show' him and make him comfortable enough to reciprocate
without fear of losing his 'manhood'.
Girls get hurt by one man and make all men pay for it.
Grown women know that that was just one man.
Girls fall in love and chase aimlessly after the object of their
affection, ignoring all 'signs'.
Grown women know that sometimes the one you love, don't always love you
back-and move on, without bitterness.
Girls will read this and get an attitude.
Grown women will read this and pass it on to other Grown women and their
male friends.
